Circle Of Light

These circle paintings have their origins in my very early works, in which I often explored geometric forms such as the circle and the square. I have always been drawn to the luminous qualities of materials, their translucency, and the way light interacts with them. This fascination also led me to create works using acrylic boxes and materials that reflect, transmit, or emit light.

For me, the circle and the square hold different yet complementary meanings. The circle suggests movement, infinity and light, while the square represents solidity and stability. I am drawn to the relationship between these two forms and to the way they can exist together in a single composition. Within the structure of the square, the circle becomes a space of movement and possibility, an expression of light and infinity.

My first light-based work emerged after a trip to the northern regions of Pakistan. I had never experienced a sky so luminous, with stars appearing on such an extraordinary scale. It was an unforgettable experience. I was particularly awe-struck by the sight of shooting stars and by the vastness and brilliance of the night sky. This encounter left a lasting impression on me, and since then, the circle has continued to recur in my work as a way of exploring light, space and infinity.

A second, equally significant source of inspiration came from my daily journey to college in London. During winter, I began to experience the city in a completely different light. The days were short, and fluorescent lights appeared throughout the urban landscape, illuminating streets and buildings long before evening had fully arrived. The city seemed transformed by this artificial light, creating an atmosphere that was both familiar and strangely luminous.

These experiences of the vast, star-filled sky and the illuminated winter city continue to inform my circle paintings. For me, the circles hold both memories: the infinity of the cosmos and the immediacy of city lights. They are a way of capturing fleeting encounters with light and translating them into a visual language that connects geometry, memory and perception.
