Figures, Objects And Spaces

My paintings begin with my immediate surroundings and the experience of being present in a particular place. Whether walking through my urban neighbourhood or travelling by plane, I am drawn to moments that make me pause and look more closely. I take photographs of these encounters and carefully edit them to find the particular moment, atmosphere, or feeling that first caught my attention. Painting then becomes a way of returning to that experience and exploring it further.

I am interested in how we occupy spaces, how we adapt to them, and how our surroundings shape our everyday lives. In the urban landscape, I observe the continuous transformation of buildings and streets through construction and demolition. I am particularly drawn to the traces of lives left behind in these changing environments. In one half-demolished building, I noticed a room with a painting of children still hanging on the wall. This small detail led me to imagine the children who might have lived there, their everyday routines, and the life that once filled the room. What remained of the building became a starting point for thinking about what was no longer visible.

Travelling by plane offers a different experience of space. Within the confined interior of an aircraft, eating, sleeping, and being entertained happen simultaneously. I am interested in how we adapt to these restricted surroundings and how a temporary space becomes part of our everyday experience.

Through painting, I move beyond documenting what I see towards exploring what I feel, remember, and imagine. The photographs provide a point of departure, but the process of painting allows me to interpret and reconsider the original encounter through colour, gesture, and the physical qualities of paint. I want to capture not simply the appearance of a place, but the experience of being there and the thoughts and feelings it evokes. My work is an ongoing reflection on the relationship between people and their surroundings, and on the lives, memories, and possibilities that exist within the spaces we inhabit.
